CNN —Defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard is in hospital after suffering a horror crash during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country on Thursday. His cycling team, Team Visma, said that Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion and pneumothorax, or collapsed lung. “He remains in hospital.”Vingegaard’s injury puts his Tour de France title defense in jeopardy, with the race starting earlier this year on June 29 due to the Paris Olympics. Television footage showed Vingegaard being taken away on a stretcher and put into an ambulance. Evenepoel, the 2022 Vuelta a España winner, also suffered a fractured collarbone, his Quick-Step Pro Cycling Team said in a statement, as well as a fractured right shoulder blade.

Kuss victory can boost U.S. road racing, says Horner
  + stars: | 2023-09-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Sepp Kuss's unlikely victory in La Vuelta a Espana could provide a timely boost for a flagging road cycle racing scene in the United States, according to Chris Horner whose 2013 triumph Kuss emulated on Sunday. The 29-year-old Kuss entered the race as a 'domestique' for more illustrious Jumbo-Visma team mates Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The road race scene is hardly booming in the U.S with few stage-racing opportunities for up-and-coming riders after the demise of the Tour of California, Colorado and Utah. "The racing scene in the U.S. is drowning or at best its nose is over the water. They were having meetings before the race, during the race, after the race, and then before everyone went to bed.

A 16-year-old cyclist located his bike using an Apple AirTag. However, using an Apple AirTag, the son quickly found his bike in the Brussels Airport, where Gray hopped on a connecting flight. Still, he told CNN, there was no movement on finding the bike — until he decided to reach out to Brussels Airport. His journey had been operated by two different, code-sharing airlines: Brussels Airlines from Lyon to Brussels, then United to the US. “They said, ‘Well, based on our records, Brussels Airlines have the bag and need to give it to us.’ They said they’d message Brussels Airlines. Barnett replied with the location as tracked by AirTag, and two photos of Gray with the bike bag to show her its size. ‘I just needed someone to care’Ella Dollinschi went above and beyond to recover Barnett's bike at Brussels Airport. CNN —A massive, out-of-control fire burning across both California and Nevada is generating extreme fire behavior, spawning “fire whirls” and creating dangerous conditions for firefighters, authorities said. Firefighters battling the blaze have seen fire whirls – “a vortex of flames and smoke that forms when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, creating a spinning column of fire,” the Mojave National Preserve said Sunday. Crews battlling the York Fire faced "fire whirls" Sunday in the Mojave National Preserve, California. Ty O'Neil/AP“These fire whirls are similar to dust devils but are specifically associated with the heat and energy released by a wildfire,” the Mojave National Preserve said. The struggle to control the York Fire has allowed smoke to reach into Nevada and southern Utah, the fire incident overview noted.

Some climate scientists call it the Southern Tornado Alley (STA): An area above the Gulf of Mexico that stretches from the western borders of Arkansas and Louisiana to eastern Georgia, encapsulating Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee in between. But in the Southern Alley, tornadoes are uniquely dangerous and often much more fatal. “The Southern Alley is where you get the human population to meet up with the storms. “Because when it gets down to it, the minutes matter.”Tornadoes that occur in the Southern Tornado Alley are far less predictable than in the Great Plains Tornado Alley, often making them more deadly. “A lot of times people hear Tornado Alley and they just think Kansas.

Seven Chinese firms including Chanson International (CHSN.O) and Hongli Group (HLP.O) have launched public offerings in March to raise a combined $82.3 million, compared with just four in the preceding two months. That will "reduce regulatory uncertainty" said Mandy Zhu, head of China Global Banking at UBS, and standardise domestic firms' international listings. "But we will abide by Chinese rules and carry out all follow-up work cooperation if necessary." Earlier in the week, steelmaker Hongli Group, food grain manufacturer YanGuFang International Group (YGF.O) and wheelchair-maker Jin Medical International listed in the U.S, also receiving tepid responses from investors. Reuters reported on Thursday that London is also courting new Chinese listings.

The visit to Selma also is an opportunity for Biden to speak directly to the current generation of civil rights activists. They urged Washington politicians visiting Selma not to sully the memories of the late civil rights activists John Lewis, Hosea Williams and others with empty platitudes. "When voting rights passed after Selma, it didn't just help Black people. We need the president to reframe this: When you block voting rights, you're not just hurting Black people. As a candidate in 2020, Biden promised to pursue sweeping legislation to bolster protection of voting rights.
Archeologists uncovered what is likely the oldest mummy ever discovered in Egypt on Thursday. Archaeologists discovered the 4,300-year-old Hekashepes near the Step Pyramid wrapped in gold leaf. Saqqara, a "great masterpiece of architectural design," is located in Memphis, the first capital of ancient Egypt. This comes only a day after a different team of archaeologists discovered ruins of another ancient city called Luxor, south of Cairo. There has been a string of major archaeological discoveries across Egypt in recent years, highlighted as part of a growing push to promote the country's tourism industry.

An Italian family is suing the elite New York boarding school where their 17-year-old son died by suicide in February, accusing the school of keeping him in “solitary confinement” while waiting for them to arrive after he was expelled for cheating on a math assignment. The suit also accuses of EF Academy of negligence in retaining, supervising and training those staffers and others.
The source said Credit Suisse has been making efforts to reclaim the First Boston brand since retiring it years ago. It was unclear whether Credit Suisse would be happy to co-exist with the other First Boston brands. When contacted by Reuters, FirstBoston.net said via email that it was not affiliated with Credit Suisse and declined comment on whether Credit Suisse had contacted it. Another company with First Boston branding is First Boston Advisors, an investment banking advisory business previously branded as Methuselah Advisors. McShane said that reviving First Boston would probably see Credit Suisse "try and brush over that the brand was abandoned."
